Gilbert, Wolfe and Hall’s stars shine bright at WPIAL Hall of Fame

first_imgKAREN HALL WITH SEAN GILBERT Sean Gilbert, Kurt Wolfe and Karen Hall were among 16 people inducted June 7 into the WPIAL Hall of Fame at Double Tree Hotel in Greentree.Sean Gilbert, a 1989 graduate of Aliquippa, was a 6-5, 280-pound linebacker who in 1988 was named USA Today’s national Defensive Player of the Year. He won two WPIAL championships at Aliquippa.“When I went to college at Pitt I was moved from linebacker to the defensive line,” said Gilbert. “I should have stayed at linebacker. That’s the position that I loved to play.”Gilbert also was the starting center on the Aliquippa PIAA State championship basketball team in 1989.“Basketball was my favorite sport,” said Gilbert. “Most people don’t know that I had several Division I basketball offers and I was very close to going to Auburn to play basketball.”He went on to play football at Pitt, and was an All-American in 1991. He was was selected by the Los Angeles Rams as the third overall pick of the 1992 NFL Draft and played 11 seasons in the NFL. He’s the uncle of current NFL star Darrelle Revis. There were some very moving moments as the honorees accepted their awards. Pine Richland high school baseball coach Kurt Wolfe’s award was presented to him by his wife in a beautiful heartwarming fashion. The WPIAL Hall of Fame Committee has organized a WPIAL Courage Award in conjunction with the WPIAL Hall of Fame. Wolfe, since 2009, has battled stage IV colon cancer that spread to his liver and threatened his life. He led his team to the 2010 WPIAL Baseball Championship following two surgeries and on-going chemotherapy treatments while never missing a game. In 2012 his team formed a service group known as the “WOLFE-PACK.”Inductee Karen Hall led Mt. Alvernia Girls’ Basketball team to a championship in 1983. Mt. Alvernia was the first WPIAL team to go through an entire season with an undefeated record. The Lions dominated Class A in 1983 and finished 34-0. Their dominance was apparent in both the WPIAL and PIAA Championship games. In the WPIAL Championship, they defeated Bishop Boyle 81-45 and in the PIAA final, they defeated Camp Hill 78-52.In 34 games the team had an average of 73 points per game and outscored their opponents by an average of 34 points per game. The team was ranked No. 25 in the USA Today. Five members of the team played college basketball.“It’s Howdy Doody Time,” was our theme song,” said Hall. “It may sound corny but the song really pumped us up.”Mt. Alvernia was coached for 48 years by the legendary Dee Porucznik.“Coach Dee was a trailblazer, advocate, mentor for strong women,” said Hall. “She had a great set of eyes, great set of ears and a colorful personality. She would tell us that when you have them down go for the jugular.”Hall was still little, maybe 11 or 12 and playing youth basketball, when other started predicting greatness for the Hill District resident.“Coaches from Mt. Alvernia came to my grade school All-Star game and afterwards I decided to attend Mt. Alvernia instead of St. Paul Cathedral (Now Oakland Catholic),” said Hall. “I played in the Ozanam Basketball League from from the age of 13 to 18. I played on the team with the legendary Mary Meyers and Jennifer Bruce Scott.”Hall still holds the record at UNLV for most career steals and in 1996 she was inducted into the Western PA High School Hall of Fame. She was the first woman to play in the Connie Hawkins Summer League and also was a coach from 1989-1991, winning two league championships. While Hall rose to stardom with her accomplishments on the hardwood, she never forgot where she came from.“I was baptized as a Catholic at a very young age and a proud member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church,” said Hall. “At Mt. Alvernia, we were good Catholic girls but we used to dance to Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’ at halftime. We didn’t know what we were doing.”Other players joining Gilbert, Wolfe and Hall in the Hall’s seventh class were Jeremy Hunter (McGuffey, 1996); Bimbo Cecconi (Donora, 1945); Christa Harmotto (Hopewell, 2005); Elaine Sobansky-Blackhurst (Trinity, 1980); Megan Schnur (Butler, 2002); Tyler Palko (West Allegheny, 2002); Jack Waltz (Mt. ‘More twists than GoT’: Twitter reacts to Maharashtra political turnaround

first_imgThe political shocker in Maharashtra, as BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis returned as the Chief Minister, may have caused much grief to the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena but the early morning development left netizens amused on Twitter. While some took to comparing the BJP’s turnaround to oft-shocking plot lines in HBO’s show ‘Game of Thrones’, others credited Amit Shah to be the ‘best finisher’ and compared him to ‘Chanakya’ Following up on the recent viral trend of tweeting with ‘I am gonna tell my kids’, Shrishty Sharma, a Twitter user, posted a photo of Amit Shah with former Indian cricket captain M S Dhoni. “I am gonna tell My Kids that they both were the ‘Best Finishers’ of Our Nation in Their Respective Field,” read the tweet. Meme_menaria, another user of the microblogging website, wrote, “Gonna tell my kids that he is the director of Game of Thrones”, with a photo of the BJP president. “The last few hours of #MaharashtraPolitics has more twists than the entire final season of #GameofThrones,” said another Twitter user. The website buzzed with varying hashtags as people reacted to the ongoing political development in the western state. While #DevendraIsBack trended with around 9,000 tweets, #MaharashtraPolitics garnered a whopping 2.5 lakh tweets. #GameofThrones, #BJPNCP, #MotaBhai, #SanjayRaut, #AmitShah, #MahaKhichdiSarkar, #Chanakya, as well as calling back to India’s retaliation across the Line of Control #SurgicalStrike also trended on the website. While Animesh Jain ‘felt sad’ for media houses who said Amit Shah’s politics had failed, Rajesh Nayak found it amusing that the news papers ‘lost importance’ with headlines based on last evening’s development that Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray was to become the state’s chief minister. “Today’s news paper has lost its importance along with #ShivaSena,” Nayak wrote. “When Mota Bhai doesn’t say anything, opposition must worry much more than when he speaks. Feeling sad for those who wrote failed #chanakya articles on @AmitShah,” Jain shared on Twitter. After a month-long impasse over finalising the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra, NCP leader Ajit Pawar took oath as the deputy chief minister early morning after he joined hands with Devendra Fadnavis, who was sworn in as the state’s chief minister. Twitterati also drew comparison between Bollywood films as well as TV shows with the current situation in the western state. Responding to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut’s tweet that read “Paap ke saudagar” (dealers of sin) directed at the BJP, Chirantan said, “This dude is already ready with the title of the Bollywood movie on #MaharashtraGovtFormation starting Akshay Kumar obviously!”. Another user Kartikeya Pandey said elections have “become more interesting than Big Boss” with an advice to entertainment channels. “Our elections have become more interesting than Big Boss. Entertainment channels should start broadcasting it otherwise news channels will bag the whole TRP,” he said. Another twitter user wrote, “Kuch dino se jo suspense, drama, tragedy, love triangle wali movie chal rahi thi waisi movie to #Bollywood kya #Hollywood waale b nahin bana payenge.”last_img read more

Government supports AIFF’s bid to host U-17 FIFA World Cup

first_imgIndia’s bid to host the 2017 U-17 FIFA World Cup got a major boost on Monday when the sports ministry announced its support to the effort. After the Commonwealth Games fiasco, insiders in the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had expressed reservations about government support towards hosting another sporting event of that magnitude. But FIFA’s activities in the country and the positive legacy that will be generated from staging the tournament have ensured the government is fully behind the AIFF’s bid.Sports minister Ajay Maken, in a letter, said that the government supports the presence of FIFA and of any FIFA member associations in India in connection with the World Cup.The AIFF will, however, have to ensure world-class infrastructure if it wants to host the World Cup. FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke had said in his recent visit to the country that there will not be any compromise on infrastructure and organisational aspects.”We have identified six cities and the secretary (Kushal Das) is looking into the details of hosting the tournament. Now with the government’s support, we are 100 per cent confident of winning the rights to host the event,” Ankur Dutta, vice-president of AIFF, told M AIL T ODAY . However, the bad publicity that the ongoing Federation Cup got has not helped in raising the game’s profile. Dutta realises that a lot of work needs to be done in getting the necessary infrastructure ready within five years.”The stadiums will have to be made world-class and the onus is on us to ensure that it is a major success. The players have been identified and they are being groomed accordingly. If we get the rights to host the tournament, it will be a massive boost for the game,” Dutta added. The FIFA executive committee will name the host country in its executive meeting on December 14 in Tokyo on the sidelines of the World Club Championship.FIFA has conveyed on several occasions that it wants India to host the event and the FIFA regional academies are an indication of the world body’s interest in giving a fillip to the game in the country. The tournament also poses a great challenge for the AIFF, who have not hosted an event of this magnitude before. Since the matches will be played in six cities, there will be a lot of logistical issues and any lapses would show the country in poor light.Sports ministry announces its support to the AIFF and tells it to go ahead with the 2017 world event bid in Tokyo on December 14.advertisementlast_img read more

first_imgRedknapp: Guardiola, Klopp couldn’t handle Brightonby Paul Vegas11 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveHarry Redknapp says the Premier League’s best managers wouldn’t be able to take a smaller club into the top-six.Redknapp believes the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino and Pep Guardiola would not be able to dominate the league without their star-studded playing groups.Asked about former club Spurs, Redknapp told the Daily Mail: “They’ve got a great group of players. It’s some squad, if you go through it, I don’t care what anybody says I don’t think there’s a lot between that squad and Liverpool’s and Man City’s squad, I really don’t.”You’re as good as your players. Graham Taylor once said “your manager is never as good as you think he is and he’s never as bad as you think he is, he’s somewhere in between” and that is football management. “If you put Pochettino, or you put Pep [Guardiola] or [Jurgen] Klopp and let them go and manage Brighton or manage Norwich or Sheffield United, they’re not gonna go and put them in the top six, it doesn’t work that way. “It’s about the players.
