Redknapp targeting happy road trip

first_img “Our home form has been excellent and that’s the key. We’ve had some real crunch games, real six pointers, beating Aston Villa, Leicester and Burnley at home,” Redknapp said. “We’re in good form at home and I couldn’t be more pleased with how we’re playing. “The key now is improving our away form, although there has been a big improvement in performances. Now we need to turn that improvement into points. “We’ve got a difficult game against one of the best teams in the Premier League in Everton. It will be tough, but we have to try and find a way to get some points.” Everton have endured a mixed campaign and sit 12th, but Redknapp refuses to read too much into their position. “It’s been one of those seasons because normally you can pick the teams who would be in the top seven at this stage,” he said. “But West Ham and Southampton have been fantastic, while Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham haven’t found the form we all thought they would. But there’s a long way to go yet.” Redknapp has denied making recent approaches for former Tottenham strikers Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe, who both play in Major League Soccer, but is interested in strengthening in January. “It’s going to be tight at the bottom and we’ll all be looking to improve our squads if we can,” he said. “If we can find a couple of players who can make bit of a difference, we’ll do that. But they have to be the right players. If we get them in, then great.” Harry Redknapp has challenged his QPR team to continue climbing away from relegation by winning their first away points of the season. The west London club stepped out of the bottom three of the Barclays Premier League last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Burnley, their third win in four matches at Loftus Road. But they have the worst away record in the competition having failed to secure even a draw in seven outings ahead of Monday night’s visit to Everton. center_img Press Associationlast_img read more

Italy dump Spain to set up epic Euro 2016 clash

first_imgSaving graceHowever, the Manchester United stopper more than made amends when he turned Pelle’s bullet header wide on eight minutes.Emanuele Giaccherini’s acrobatic effort was then turned onto the post by De Gea, albeit referee Cuneyt Cakir had already blown for a foul as Italy continued to dominate the early exchanges. It took Spain 28 minutes to even have an effort on goal as Iniesta’s weak shot was straight at Buffon.Antonio Conte’s side finally made the breakthrough 12 minutes before half-time when Spain captain Sergio Ramos unncessarily dived in on Pelle to concede a free-kick on the edge of the box.Eder’s powerful effort was parried by De Gea only as far as Giaccherini and he nudged the ball into Chiellini’s path to bundle home.Only a De Gea wonder save to tip a fiercely dipping drive from Giaccherini over kept Spain in the game before half-time.Spain coach Vicente del Bosque introduced the more physical presence of 35-year-old striker Aritz Aduriz for Nolito at the break. And it nearly paid dividends straight away as Alvaro Morata — kept quiet in the first 45 minutes by former Juventus teammates Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci — headed a golden chance straight at Buffon.De Gea was called upon once more to block from Eder when the Brazilian-born Inter Milan forward burst clear on goal with the chance to double Italy’s advantage.Another Italy counter-attack then caused chaos in the Spanish defence as Mattia de Sciglio’s low cross ricocheted around the box before being cleared.Aduriz swept the ball wide and Ramos headed over from a corner as Italy began to settle on their one-goal lead in the final quarter.Iniesta’s rasping volley was tipped over by Buffon, before Pique’s long-range effort stung the palms of the 38-year-old.However, with Aduriz having to be replaced by Pedro Rodriguez due to a head knock, Spain didn’t have a recognised striker in their search for an equaliser in the final 10 minutes.Italy comfortably held on and Pelle doubled the lead with his poacher’s strike in the first minute of injury time.Share on: WhatsApp Paris, France | AFP |Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle scored as Italy exacted revenge for their Euro 2012 final hammering by dumping Spain out of Euro 2016 with a deserved 2-0 last 16 win on Monday. The landmark victory set up an epic Italy-Germany quarter final. Chiellini forced home the first goal from close range after goalkeeper David de Gea could only parry Eder’s fiercely struck free-kick. Pelle volleyed in a deflected cross in injury time to complete Spain’s heartbreak.Outgoing Italian manager Antonio Conte danced along the Stade de France touchline to celebrate while his players credited his tactics for the win.“Mr. Conte is so important as a coach because he can implement a gameplan and he becomes more important with every match,” said defender Leonardo Bonucci.“This process which started two years ago has been essential.”After crashing out of the World Cup in the first round, Vicente del Bosque’s team have now failed to get to the Euro quarter finals.“We have to accept the disappointment. They were more clinical than us when it mattered and got the better of us,” playmaker Andres Iniesta told Spanish television.A series of De Gea saves kept Spain in the game, but their quest for an unprecedented third consecutive Euro title peetered out as Gianluigi Buffon saved from Iniesta and Gerard Pique late on to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash with Germany on Saturday in Bordeaux.Spain had lost just one of their previous 11 meetings with Italy, including a 4-0 win in the Euro 2012 final. But the Azzurri were by far the better side in the opening 45 minutes and could have been more than one goal up at the break.De Gea had been much-criticised for his performance as Spain’s 15-game unbeaten in the Euros came to an end on Tuesday with a 2-1 defeat to Croatia which cost them top spot in Group D.last_img read more

Cong has lost direction and plot as main Oppn party: Govt

first_imgNew Delhi, Dec 21 (PTI) The government today said the Congress has lost its “direction and plot” as the main opposition party as it disrupted cricketer Sachin Tendulkar from speaking on the non-political issue of sports in the Rajya Sabha.”The Congress today behaved in an undemocratic manner in the Upper House by disrupting Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar from speaking on the important and non-political issue of sports and its development in the country,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar told reporters here. The cricket icon could not initiate a short-duration discussion on the right to play and the future of sports in India.”Despite repeated requests from the Chairman of the House that he (Tendulkar) should be allowed to speak on this important and public interest issue, the Congress did not allow him to speak,” Kumar said.Amid continuing stalemate between the BJP and the Congress over Prime Minister Narendra Modis remarks against his predecessor Manmohan Singh, Kumar said the opposition party has lost its “direction and plot”.”After disrupting the Lok Sabha for several days, today they are participating in the discussion on supplementary demand for the grants. But in the Rajya Sabha, they are continuing to disrupt the proceedings,” the minister said, adding that the party was “totally confused”. PTI JTR RAM SMNlast_img read more

Notley disappointed Alberta out of running for new Amazon HQ

first_imgCALGARY – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says it’s disappointing the province won’t be home to Amazon’s second headquarters.Toronto is the only Canadian city to make the short-list for the e-commerce giant’s new North American office.Notley says her office spoke with the Seattle-based company and was told the Calgary bid was particularly exciting and reflected well on Alberta. She says the exercise underscored that the province needs to up its game when it comes to developing mass transit systems.Notley says Alberta is as big an economic centre as British Columbia and Ontario, but investment in transit lagged under previous governments. She says diversifying Alberta’s economy away from oil and gas won’t happen overnight and the Amazon bid was a good learning experience.“There’s no question, it’s unfortunate. It would have been great to have gotten that deal,” Notley said Thursday.“In the meantime, we are certainly going to continue our work that is focused on diversification. We have a province where there was a lot of talk of diversification for many years, but not a lot of work going on about it.”Notley said over the last 2 1/2 years the Alberta government has made a lot of investments to turn that corner.last_img read more
