News story: Home Secretary to take action against violent content online

first_imgThe new national police social media hub will be established within the Metropolitan Police, transforming the current capability and extending its reach to other forces. It will bring together a dedicated team to act against online material, focusing on investigative, disruption and enforcement work against specific gang targets. The hub will also make referrals to social media companies so illegal and harmful content can be taken down immediately. The government’s social media hub is part of the Serious Violence Strategy which puts greater focus on steering young people away from a life of crime alongside a robust law enforcement response.Speaking at the Taskforce about the hub’s launch Duncan Ball, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service and National Policing lead for Gangs, County Lines and Knives said: guidance to companies to outline what activity and material constitutes violent or violence related content the timeframe for content to be removed steps companies should take to continually review their efforts in tackling this content the reasonable steps companies should take when dealing with accounts that have uploaded, engaged with or disseminated violent content Social media is increasingly being used as a platform to incite violence, promote gang culture and legitimise the use of knives. I will not let this continue. Tech firms have been making progress in tackling this harmful content, but more needs to be done. Our Online Harms White Paper will ensure they have a legal duty to protect their users and by meeting routinely, in forums like the Serious Violence Taskforce, we can continue to hold these companies to account. But we also need the strongest possible law enforcement response. The national police social media hub will ensure a team of dedicated officers are identifying and taking action against gang-related content. As part of fulfilling a new duty of care, social media firms will be expected to do much more to tackle serious violence content. A code of practice will be devised by an independent regulator to ensure social media platforms know what is expected. Some of the areas we expect the regulator to include in a code of practice include: It is already an offence to incite, assist, or encourage violence online. This further action will build upon the work of the police and social media companies to tackle serious violence. The government is currently consulting on new laws to tackle online harms, including the hosting of gang-related content, especially that which incites violence and glamorises weapons. Chairing the latest Serious Violence Taskforce, the Home Secretary heard what steps social media companies have taken to tackle violent content online. The Home Secretary also confirmed the new £1.38 million government funded social media hub will be fully operational at the end of May. The new 17-strong team of police staff and officers will be tasked with disrupting and removing overt and covert gang-related online content. At the Taskforce, senior leaders from Google and Facebook updated members on the action they are taking to protect vulnerable users from harmful content, including videos promoting violence. It comes after the government launched the Online Harms White Paper which proposes a new statutory duty of care on social media companies and an independent regulator appointed to enforce the new standards.Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: Police are committed to doing everything we can to tackle violent crime and the impact that it has on our communities. Social media is playing a role in escalating violence between young people and enabling content that glamorises or encourages violence and crime. This funding from the Home Office is welcome and enables us to continue developing our capability to tackle violence that originates online. By working together with social media companies we will ensure that material that lures young people into a dangerous, violent life of crime, and encourages violence is quickly dealt with to cut off this outlet for gangs and criminals.last_img read more

World honours Madiba at 90

first_imgThe 46664 concert held in Hyde ParkLondon will raise funds for HIV/AIDSprojects and simultaneously honour NelsonMandela who turns 90 in July.(Image: SAfrica.info)Tamara O’ReillySince his release from prison in 1990, one can safely say that Nelson Mandela has never woken up and wondered if anyone would remember his birthday.Although he has no blue blood, Mandela’s birthdays are celebrated with the pomp and ceremony usually reserved for royalty. From concerts aound the word to books and art exhibitions in his name he has had it all for his birthday, and his 90th one on 18 July is no exception. Well ahead of the day, wishes and gifts from ordinary and famous people alike have been streaming in but it is in London where the main celebrations will take place this year.Madiba has been in the English capital for a week of celebrations ahead of the 46664 concert in his honour, which will be taking place in Hyde Park on 27 June. The concert bears the name of his prisoner number while he served a 27-year sentence on Robben Island. His crimes included sabotage committed while he spearheaded the struggle against apartheid.Exactly 46 664 tickets went on sale, the proceeds of which will go towards the 46664 foundation which raises funds for HIV/AIDS projects, a cause close to Mandela’s heart. In January 2005 he lost a son to AIDS, and South Africa, his home, has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world. Some of the artists performing in the three-hour concert include rock legends Queen, Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, Annie Lennox and Simple Minds. A handful of South African artists like Loyiso and the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir will also make an appearance. This concert is also being held to commemorate 20 years since the Free Nelson Mandela concert was held in Wembley Stadium, London in June 1988 to raise awareness about Mandela’s incarceration. More than 72 000 people attended and it was broadcast to more than 600-million television viewers from 60 countries. The first 46664 concert was held on 29 November 2003 at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town and since then concerts have taken place in Johannesburg, Norway, Madrid and London.A charity gala attended by some of the world most influential people including heads of states, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and famous entertainers Sir Elton John and Sir Bob Geldof was held on 26 June. The evening raised more than $10-million which will be used in the fight against HIV/Aids in Southern Africa.Birthday wishesThis year a website was launched 46 664 minutes before Mandela turns 90, where people can leave their birthday wishes. So far more than 40 000 messages have been received with about 29 000 of them coming from Tanzania. Some other events to mark the occasion which are scheduled for the rest of the year include the launch of the Nelson Mandela Rhodes Foundation’s young leader’s facility in the Western Cape in July, and the delivery of the sixth annual Nelson Mandela Lecture at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto, by Liberian president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.In August the 15-city American symphonic production titled Portrait of Mandela kicks off in Atlanta and in September the 46664 organisation has been awarded the only slot reserved each year for a charity event at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The ANC, the ruling party and one Mandela has been a member of since 1942, will host a free concert in Pretoria, Gauteng, in honour of Mandela.Useful links46664 Nelson Mandela Foundation Official birthday celebrationslast_img read more

Top Paid iPhone App Goes Free Forever: RunKeeper is All About the Platform

first_imgFormerly priced at $9.99, fitness-tracker RunKeeper was one of the first 200 apps in the iTunes app store and became one of the store’s top sellers. After a month of free downloads, the company announced today that the product will remain free indefinitely. It’s not about app sales – it’s all about the platform.RunKeeper doesn’t just keep track of your running, it tracks all kinds of exercise and health data. Other companies have built RunKeeper integration into sensors ranging from heart rate monitors to sleep monitors and bathroom scales. The company says it will launch a public Application Programming Interface this year. Running coaches are already selling training programs on the RunKeeper site and power-users can pay for the RunKeeper Elite level of service. RunKeeper is worth paying attention to even if you don’t use it – because it represents a kind of software that could be key in defining the future.“We are less concerned about short term monetization,” founding CEO Jason Jacobs told us by email today, “and more concerned about building up the biggest, most engaged community of fitness enthusiasts that we can.” Jacobs told us that three million users had downloaded a RunKeeper app over the past 2 years, 1 million of whom downloaded Pro for free in a single week in January. The free and Pro versions of the app both made Apple’s top free and grossing apps of 2010 lists. We wrote about RunKeeper as an example of the quantified self when it announced a small round of funding from O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures in November. Bryce Roberts, co-founder of that fund, wrote the following about the investment:You see, what appears to be a pretty straight forward running app is actually just the wedge to a much bigger opportunity. By leveraging many of the trends we’ve been tracking under the theme of the quantified self we see a huge opportunity in data being collected from a whole new wave of sensors such as phones, watches, shoes, video games and many that aren’t even on the market yet. FitnessKeeper has the opportunity to layer social dynamics, expert advice, community and game mechanics to create value from this data and we think that’s exciting.RunKeeper and the Internet of ThingsWhen the instrumented world, or The Internet of Things, arrives in the mainstream – one of the ways it may be interacted with directly by end-users is through apps like RunKeeper. Getting as many sensors into the hands of as many people as possible, for free, is a smart strategy. All that data will be put online for individual and presumably aggregate analysis. Much like Twitter focused on getting millions of people using its system before worrying too much about revenue (it is now estimated that Twitter will make $150 million this year) – for RunKeeper to amass as many users as possible makes sense. Because it’s all about the platform and the value that can be built on top of it. Ten dollars for an iPhone app might seem like it was a lot of money, but there’s a whole lot more money and impact to be made from a future where millions of people monitor and improve their physical health.Imagine the possibilities that could emerge if RunKeeper data were considered in a broader context. That’s what Vipul Gupta, Arshan Poursohi, Poornaprajna Udupi, researchers at Sun Microsystems Laboratory, imagined when discussing RunKeeper in reference to their vision of what they call Sensor.Network. (Sensor.Network: An Open Data Exchange for the Web of Things PDF, 2010) The three describe that network as “a web-based infrastructure for storing, sharing, searching, visualizing and analyzing data from heterogeneous devices and facilitating easy interaction amongst devices and end users through an open, REST-based API.”“For example, the RunKeeper iPhone application and its associated web portal use the GPS sensor built into the iPhone to help runners keep track of their runs. If this data were managed using an open data exchange, a runner could potentially correlate these measurements with data from temperature and humidity sensors in the area for greater insight when evaluating her own performance.”That’s just the beginning of what would be possible if health performance data on this level were made available for cross-referencing with other data sets, many of which are also just beginning to emerge. The Sun researchers say that the true value of all this data is in “signi?cant insights and actions that enhance the health of our planet and its populations.” I’ll call it an unprecedented opportunity for social self-awareness. They were found in the papers of the Marquesses of Lothian, held at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout The whole piece was performed by the British early music ensemble La Serenissima. Hopefully, either the group or the venue will release an accessible online recording of the performance in its entirety. The second violin part was incomplete and was finished by Woolley, a research fellow at Southampton University in the U.K., using the manuscript of another Vivaldi flute concerto, which appears to be a variant of Il Gran Mogol. The other concertos in the “national concertos” quartet to which this piece belongs, La Francia, La Spagna and L’Inghilterro, remain missing. Il Gran Mogol refers to India’s Mughal empire. Vivaldi’s pieces have turned upbefore, so the idea they rest of the quartet’s concertos may eventually be found is not completely out of the question. Ronjan unhappy with silver medal

first_imgTo me, it is no surprise that we are doing so well in shooting at the Commonwealth Games.Ten gold, seven silver and one bronze is surely no joke, though it must be said that a couple of more gold medals instead of silver in double trap and trap would’ve been the icing on the cake.I know people had great expectations from Asher Noria and myself and we are also disappointed at not being able to turn those two silvers into gold. Then again, one has to understand that while the field in CWG for rifle and pistol events may not be the strongest our shooters ever face, in clay target events, the Australians and English are right up there among the best in the world in their events.Australia’s Adam Vella and Michael Diamond are the No. 1 trap team in the world and it is difficult to beat them anywhere.I feel sad that despite shooting magnificently for 99 and 98 respectively, Mansher Singh and Manavjit Sandhu had to settle for silver in the trap pairs. But the scores our shooters are posting are nothing short of world- class. I always believe that at an event like the CWG, it is not the number of medals you win that matter but your scores. Look at Gagan Narang going past his own world record in the 10m air rifle – it may not be a recognised record but to shoot that score, even in practice, takes a lot out of you, no matter who you are.advertisementAnd it would be more than enough to win an Olympic gold by a comfortable margin. Similarly, Vijay Kumar and Omkar Singh shooting 586- 587 in their events again represents a very high level, one that would fetch them medals at World Cups. This is presenting the real picture of where we stand in the world in our competitions.Speaking of Gagan, I must say that with his third gold on Friday, he looks set to live up to his promise of six gold medals in these Games. I am certain that he is going to make this amazing achievement his own because that’s the sort of form he is in and has been in for a while now. He is India’s most- consistent World Cup medallist and the way he bounced back from the disappointment of missing out on the final in Beijing is a lesson in setting goals and achieving them. The pistol shooters have so far been perfect; hitting gold in every event. There has been a lot of talk surrounding the fact that they don’t have a specialist coach guiding them since the last Olympics, but their performance speaks volumes about their character.Maybe the fact that they didn’t have a coach made them more determined and credit should also go to the government for meeting all the training and ammunition needs they had.I believe our pistol shooters can reach the level that we have reached in rifle shooting, where we have a world champion, an Olympic champion and world record holders. People like Vijay and Omkar can join that select band and show the real strength of Indian shooting. With my event over, I’m looking forward to the Asian Games in Guangzhou now, because that will present a new challenge. The Chinese shooters are very strong and competing against them on their home turf is going to be great fun.As far as the CWG is concerned, I believe the stated intention of finishing second in the medals tally is a realistic possibility. I feel we can cross the threshold of 30 gold medals as this time, the sports that have been added, such as tennis, wrestling and archery, are those that will fetch us gold.(The writer is a joint world recordholder in double trap shooting)last_img read more
