You’d rather blow the whistle and check it after if you’re not sure,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports post-game. “I was, and quite a few Man United fans were sure, that was a penalty.”Then again, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t. first_imgRedknapp: Guardiola, Klopp couldn’t handle Brightonby Paul Vegas11 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveHarry Redknapp says the Premier League’s best managers wouldn’t be able to take a smaller club into the top-six.Redknapp believes the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino and Pep Guardiola would not be able to dominate the league without their star-studded playing groups.Asked about former club Spurs, Redknapp told the Daily Mail: “They’ve got a great group of players. It’s some squad, if you go through it, I don’t care what anybody says I don’t think there’s a lot between that squad and Liverpool’s and Man City’s squad, I really don’t.”You’re as good as your players. Graham Taylor once said “your manager is never as good as you think he is and he’s never as bad as you think he is, he’s somewhere in between” and that is football management. “If you put Pochettino, or you put Pep [Guardiola] or [Jurgen] Klopp and let them go and manage Brighton or manage Norwich or Sheffield United, they’re not gonna go and put them in the top six, it doesn’t work that way. “It’s about the players. He [Pochettino] has got the good players but at the moment there’s been hiccups – one of two of them are not playing to their real potential or as good as they can.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Report: Fred Hoiberg “Couldn’t Fully Commit” To Iowa State Return During Recruitment Of 5-Star Cheick Diallo

first_imgFred Hoiberg dances in new Infiniti comemrcial.YouTube YouTubeYouTubeToday, the Chicago Bulls ended months of speculation with the firing of head coach Tom Thibodeau. While a number of names have been connected to the opening, one of the most popular is Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg. Earlier this month, ISU athletic director Jamie Pollard admitted that Hoiberg has NBA aspirations, and reports emerged that the Bulls job is his “if he wants it.” According to the Ames Tribune, during his recruitment of five-star Kansas signee Chieck Diallo, the nation’s top power forward, Hoiberg could not commit to a return to the Cyclones for this upcoming season. In early April, Hoiberg let it be known to five-star recruit Cheick Diallo that his immediate future at ISU was not a certainty, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told the Ames Tribune. While Hoiberg did not definitively say he planned to move on to the NBA, sources said, he also communicated that he couldn’t fully commit he would be returning to ISU to coach Diallo and what figures to be a preseason top-10 Cyclones team in 2015-16.Losing Hoiberg would be a tough pill to swallow for Cyclone fans, but credit him for not lying to a recruit. There may not be that many coaches who would take that approach, with a top prospect on the line, and no guarantee that he has a new job lined up.[Ames Tribune]last_img read more

Chelsea should appoint manager from within, club legend claims

first_imgChelsea have been urged to consider appointing Gianfranco Zola as their next manager if Maurizio Sarri moves on, with Dennis Wise seeing no need to bring in another coach from elsewhere.Speculation regarding a change in the dugout continues to rage at Stamford Bridge.Goal has revealed that Sarri, after just one season in English football, is eager to return to his native Italy at Juventus. The Serie A champions are in the market for a new boss after seeing Massimiliano Allegri depart.Sarri is seen as an obvious choice, having led Chelsea to a top-four finish in the Premier League and Europa League glory despite enduring a difficult debut campaign in west London.Several names are said to be in the frame should Sarri decide to move on.Allegri is among those reported to be on the Blues’ shortlist, along with the likes of Ajax manager Erik ten Hag and Wolves boss Nuno.Frank Lampard, as a club legend, has also been heavily linked with a return to familiar surroundings from a first coaching post at Derby.Gianfranco Zola ChelseaWise, though, believes that Chelsea should be looking closer to home and to another iconic figure if the managerial baton is passed on again this summer. He said in a recent Twitter post: “Will be disappointed if Sarri goes.“Chelsea are back where they belong in the CL & he also won his first trophy.“The perfect replacement is already there, in Gianfranco Zola, he knows the young & experienced players well, also gained so much experience over the last few years.”Zola, who spent seven years with Chelsea in his playing days, returned to the club in 2018 to work alongside Sarri. He remains a hugely popular figure at Stamford Bridge and does boast prior experience of life in a top job.The 52-year-old’s coaching career to date includes spells at West Ham, Watford, Cagliari, Al-Arabi and Birmingham. He was once considered to be a Chelsea boss of the future, given his strong ties to the club, but limited success in the posts he has filled so far have led to him slipping down the pecking order. Neymar! Neymar! Neymar! Brazil star on Barca minds after Bilbao disaster

first_img“Neymar! Neymar! Neymar!,” chanted gathered Barcelona fans at president Josep Maria Bartomeu as he arrived with the team to a Bilbao hotel before their opening La Liga clash on Friday. And the Brazilian striker’s name was on the Catalan club’s mind at the end of the night too, after a painful 1-0 defeat by Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames, as Luis Suarez went off injured.Evergreen 38-year-old Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz scored a sensational scissor-kick winner in the final stages, showing the cutting edge Barcelona lacked with his first touch after coming on as a substitute. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Barcelona desperately missed captain Lionel Messi and struggled to break down the impressive Basque side in a tight clash, despite summer signing Antoine Griezmann making his debut for the visitors. The French forward showed the willingness to work defensively that made him such a favourite of Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, although he spent too much time in those areas for Barcelona’s liking. Athletic were better for most of the game and Marc-Andre ter Stegen made some smart stops from Inaki Williams and Raul Garcia, although Barcelona twice hit the woodwork.Suarez struck the post after Unai Lopez’s haphazard pass-back found the Uruguayan alone in the Athletic area, but he was already limping by that point with a calf injury and was soon replaced by Rafinha.Luis Suarez BarcelonaThe Brazilian, who may well leave Barcelona before the transfer window shuts, crashed an effort against the crossbar via the hand of Unai Simon.Rafinha showed nice skill, invention and good link play after the break and, if Barcelona could guarantee that he will remain injury-free, would be a fine option to have in reserve for the attack.Unfortunately, history has shown the Brazilian is eminently breakable and the Catalans cannot rely on him to stay fit.Instead, they continue to push for his compatriot to return to Camp Nou, while pushing another out the door.Barcelona director Guillermo Amor said before the game that the club had reached the basis of a deal with Bayern Munich for Philippe Coutinho to leave on loan, ending a painful year-and-a-half spell for the former Liverpool player in Spain.Coutinho’s departure will clear a big chunk from the wage bill, creating space for Neymar’s potential return two years after leaving for PSG for a world-record fee.It is important for Barcelona not to overreact. This loss is just the first match of 38 and, of course, the team is not fully up to speed yet, especially not without talisman and star player Messi. After all, the last time Barcelona lost the first game of the season was under Pep Guardiola in 2008, a 1-0 defeat by Numancia at the start of a campaign that saw them win an historic treble.Neymar PSGAnd yet, when Carles Perez came on for Sergi Roberto for the final 15 minutes, it did exemplify why Barcelona are battling to bring Neymar ‘home’.It was impossible not to recall the Brazilian and his box of tricks in his first era at Barcelona while watching Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele struggle to beat Athletic defenders. Some fans have been confused by the club’s determination to re-sign Neymar, but this performance may start to change minds.last_img read more
